Do you Spy on your Kids?

When it comes to our children, the digital age has increased the forms of bullying. And more ways to misbehave. I’ve resorted to periodically monitoring my child to make sure everything is ok.

I’m guilty of spying for a greater good, as I’m sure you are. Every so often I make sure that my son’s emails and texts do not contain alarm-raising content-- bullying, notes from strangers, or obscene material. You get the idea.

It’s not because I have tons of free time. Quite the opposite. I wish I could check in on him more often. There’s so much more going on in his life, and his cell phone is no longer just a security tool to be used when we need to locate him or let him know we’re running late. It’s a socializing tool. We need to keep him safe.

Just a few days ago there were some texts that caught my attention. The language was bordering explicit but not sexual in nature. Somewhere in between PG-13 and Rated R. Lots of cursing and nasty bashing.

Even after talking to my son about it, I can’t tell if it’s bullying behavior I should be concerned about or if it’s kids saying really stupid things to each other. Either way, I asked my son not to initiate or respond to the commentary.

I know I’m not the only one who spies on my child for a cause. Admit it. How often do you monitor your child’s cell phone and email? What have you found?

I came on here to find out how to monitor my son's online life because of inappropriate text messages I just found on his phone this morning, initiated by him! I've begun checking his phone regularly (it's easier because we only have one charger between two phones, so when I switch my charged battery for his dead one, I check his phone). On average, I am checking it about twice a week. Some might say that too much, but alot can happen in 2-3 days, as I found out this morning. At this point, I trying to decide how and when to initiate the conversation we need to have about bullying, inappropriate language use, talking to girls in a respectful manner, etc. We'll be in the car together for about 30 minutes en route to a field trip for him, but I'm thinking I'll wait until we get home tonight, so that we can have an unrestricted time frame to talk and come to some understanding and agreement. BTW, thanks so much for this post!
