Sex Ed in Kindergarten? This School District Is Way Off

A Montana school district is proposing to start sex ed in kindergarten. Is this going too far or just what kids need?

I couldn’t believe it when I heard that a school district in Helena, Montana is proposing to start sex education in kindergarten. I mean seriously?

As a mother, I don’t like to see state and local governments interfering into a parents’ territory. And teaching a child about sex and values, especially at age 5 and 6, is primarily a parents’ role, not the school’s job.

I certainly understand in theory, the need to prepare children for the world, but what happened to innocence? What happened to allowing a child to just be a child and only have childlike vocabularies. At least through kindergarten for crying out loud.

By the way, I thought kindergarten was for social skills, singing songs  and learning the ABC and reading basics. That’s the way it should be. For one, every child’s maturity level is different in kindergarten.  Yet, the classes are grouped only by age. Is it in the best interest of a child to introduce mature, even confusing concepts before that child is ready? Knowing when a child is ready is a parents’ decision not one that should mandated by the school board.

The proposed curriculum includes teaching the difference between homosexual and heterosexual sex in first grade and by the time students are 10 years old, instruction will include the various ways people can have intercourse, be it vaginally, orally or through "anal penetration," according to the proposal. By 7th grade, the students are taught they have the legal right to an abortion, as well as sterilization and contraception.

This kind of proposed legislation sends a dangerous message to parents who are being usurped out of their rights to raise their children and instill their own family values.  Many of the parents in the area are already threatening to pull their kids out of the public school system if the proposal is passed. The vote is  scheduled for mid-August. I think it’s time for parents to take back their child-rearing and let the school district focus on academics.

Would you approve such a proposal if I was put forward in your town? What do you think?
