I returned to college in my late twenties, and wanted to have my first child as close to graduation as possible. Well, we found out we were pregnant, and my due date was four days before my graduation. Talk about planning. My darling daughter, being the angel that she is, of course waited and let me walk in the graduation ceremony. Then she decided I needed a few extra days, so she stayed content in my tummy. For another full week. No dilation, no contractions, nothing. As you can imagine, at that point you're as ready as you possibly can be, so waiting longer is frustrating. I did have work to keep me occupied, and since we now knew the exact day my maternity leave would begin, due to being induced, I was able to enter all of my leave time prior to the birth and have that off my mind. We went to the hospital to be induced at about 1:00 AM. By 3:00 AM Olivia's heart rate had dropped 3 times. They stopped inducing, and her heart rate returned to normal. They told us that we had two choices, they could either try to induce again, or they could schedule a C-Section in the morning. They said that if they induced again, and the heart rate dropped again, they would do an emergency C-Section. After having three scares already, and knowing that our daughter was on the larger side, we chose to go in for a C-Section. She was born at 9:59 AM, weighing in at 9 pounds. When she was born, they told my husband that the umbilical cord was getting twisted up around her neck and body, and that was what had caused the heart rate to drop. After that much time she had just run out of room in there. But she was born healthy and wonderful, and seemed to adjust to her birth and all the excitement beautifully. The only thing that I didn't like from the C-Section was that I had to go into the hospital room by myself afterwards, and her and her daddy went to the nursery together for a bit. He got to experience her first bath, her first tests, and her first vomiting, since she had swallowed a bit of meconium. He still hasn't gotten used to the vomiting. But we were both so happy at the birth of our daughter, and so overjoyed that she was safe and healthy. I can't imagine her birth being any more perfect. And, she was born on our fourth wedding anniversary, which was the best gift ever.
