My baby's birth came via a phone call. We adopted. Our baby had been born the night before, and we received a call at 9am the following morning to tell us that a birthmother had delivered a girl and they needed parents immediately for this child. My entire family was together that morning at my parents' lake house just outside our city of residence. That phone call could not have happened at a more perfect time. We were all together, future grandparents, aunt & uncle and a cousin, all there to hear the words (on a speakerphone) that a "baby was on the ground" and if we wanted her, we had to leave immedately. We did just that. After a seven hour car ride (which included a flat tire!), we saw our daughter through the nursery window at the hospital. We returned the next day, hoping to see her again, but they wouldn't let us, since we didn't have full custody yet. I told the head nurse, "well that's OK, we've been pregnant for 3 years, we can wait another day." Thatnext day was May 1. Most people exchange flowers on May Day, but my May Day basket that year held a precious baby girl. I remain amazed every day of her life that someone gave me this special charge: to take this baby and care for her and raise her to be an intelligent, strong woman. I never met my daughter's birthmother, but if I ever do, I will hug her and thank her for the all the joy she gave me in this little bundle of life.
