Monster Repellant

When our daughter was younger and became afraid of the dark at bedtime, my husband and I tried our best to come up with clever ways to chase the bogeyman away. We plugged in different varieties of night lights, but according to her they all cast spooky shadows on the wall that made her room seem even more foreboding. Next we bought a bottle of lavender room spray and called it "monster repellant", giving her window and door a little spray at bedtime to deter any pesky night creatures. This trick worked a little too well however, because soon she was gleefully spraying every square inch of her bedroom and the hallway until a person couldn't walk up the stairs without their eyes tearing up. My husband finally came up with the perfect solution. He gave her one of the cancer survivor medals he had been given at our local Relay For Life Walk. He told her that wearing that medal made him feel brave and strong, so maybe wearing it would make her feel brave too. She fell asleep that night with the medal around her neck, and she never had a problem sleeping in the dark again. Even now that she's older and no longer fears things that go bump in the night, she'll still wear Daddy's medal if she's away from home and starts to feel homesick, or whenever she needs an extra boost of confidence.
