Kate DiCamillo: A Mom's Best Friend

Kate DiCamillio, author of The Tale of Despereaux, knows a thing or two about kids. Like a sneaky chef, the award-winning writer serves up delicious stories packed with good, hearty morals to grow on. Taking time from a whirl of activity surrounding the release of Despereaux, the movie, she talks about the honor of being a Momtourage member.
Every mom needs Kate DiCamillo in her life. The Tale of Despereaux author is one of those wondrously child-like adults who, without even trying, gets kids. She knows the secrets of their little people-stuck-in-big people-land.
She can translate their language (a scientific code involving a series of grunts and eye-rolling, from what I gather). She can interpret their dreams. And she can tell their stories. Man-oh-man, can she tell their stories. Despereaux is a mouse who falls in love with a princess. He is poignantly heroic and demonstrates lessons in forgiveness, love, self-esteem—and soup—so masterfully that my kids never saw the moral message hit them. DiCamillio is that good.
So I simply had to meet her. Partly because, it has long been my suspicion that The New York Times best-selling author may not be a grown-up at all. She is kind of short and from what I've observed, clearly unable to restrain her "outside voice" impulses in public places. But five minutes into our chat, it was clear that she is far too wise to be a kid in grown up's clothing. She is pint sized, and proud of it, and apparently she's just, well, loud. She's not a mom—whew! One less "perfect mom" to beat myself up about. She's an aunt—the really special kind that doesn't come with blood ties, but one kids simply choose to love and adore. And, of course, we all know that makes her one of us—part of Momtourage!
Here's what she had to say about friendship, breaking rules and the power of "please" and "thank you"...
Did you set out to be in a Momtourage or did it just happen?
I guess it was pretty organic. All I know is I could not exist without these mothers—all my best friends—in my life. I've known Tracey, who is mom to Luke and Roxy and the dog Henry, since we were 8 years old. I'm honored to be a part of children's lives. And it was Luke who actually helped create The Tale of Despereaux back when he was just a little guy.
How so?
One day, he simply said to me, "Aunt Kate, I think you should write a book about an unlikely hero—with big ears."
Then what happened? Did he want the character to fall in love and save rat kind?
No, it was up to me to do the rest. He sort of moved on after that...just wanted to get that off his chest, I guess. He was only 8 at the time. By the time the book was finished and the Newbery Awards were announced he was 12 and was totally over it. I took him to the awards banquet and he was like, "Whatever." As it turns out, he's 16 now and a fine writer in his own right. He is an amazingly fabulous kid. He'll be great at whatever he decides to do in life.
Spoken like a true mom. Do you think your nieces and nephews look at you as another mother or a kid like them? What happens when you have to lay down the law?
I'm not a mother figure. But I have to say I am a top-quality aunt. I'm a friend, more than anything. Kids like to have someone big to break the rules and sort of push the boundaries with. I'm not a disciplinarian at all. Not because of some grand plan. I've just never had to be that.
But what kids do know is that I have a thing—and I believe it so firmly—about manners. I will not put anything in your hand without hearing "thank you." Everyone in this world deserves to be thanked, no matter what. "Please" and "thank you" are wonderful, wonderful words that everyone is entitled to. And it may sound old fashioned, but it's one of those lessons that serve you well for your whole life. It certainly has for me. This very minute—doing interviews about the movie, talking to the press, meeting fans—for me, the most important thing I can do is number one, be present and number two, be grateful. I mean, think about it. Thanks is huge.
Well said. Thank you, Kate.
Thank you back!
