Think you’re seeing everything your teen is up to on Facebook? Think again.
Just when you thought you were seriously ‘in there’ since your child accepted your “friend” request on Facebook, turns out there’s more than meets the eye. Don’t break into high fives just yet over your presumed new access into your teen’s life. We asked our resident teen expert to give us the skinny on how teens are outsmarting moms on Facebook. Yeah, you will Like This.
Here’s what our teen said: “Here’s the thing, Facebook features something called a limited profile. This is essentially a mechanism that allows kids to filter what our parents can see. With just a click of a button, we can hide mischievous pictures, comments, and so much more. Let’s call a spade a spade: kids definitely try to benefit from the technological advantage they have over their parents, and this example is no different.”
Think your kid is not on Facebook because she didn’t show up in your searches? Not so fast. Our resident teen weighs in:
“Parents sometimes make themselves a Facebook page just so they can search and see if their kids have one, but his doesn’t always work. Under the same privacy settings we use to filter information, we can enable a capability that makes it impossible to be searched. Therefore, it may look as if our page is non-existent, but little do you know it’s our favorite pastime.”
