Are December Birthdays Overshadowed by Holidays?

Everyone in my family, immediate and otherwise and other than myself, is born in December! The madness starts on December 1 with my grandmother and doesn't end until December 31 with my nephew. So, with the majority of relatives all born in December there was never any of that, "Here's your birthday slash Christmas present" in this little clan. No way! These people are way too demanding….and there’s just way too many of them to let that happen. There will be no re-gifting with this lot.
When I was adopting my oldest child, my only non-negotiable was that the baby not have a December birthday. Honestly, he or she could have had webbed feet and a tail and I wouldn't have cared.
My mother always went out of her way to make my sister feel special on December 23rd...despite the fact that most of her friends could never attend her birthday parties because they always coincided with Hanukah or their own holiday festivities. Let’s face it, by that date most of the known world is officially out of town.
On December 22nd of this year, my little one turns nine. I can't believe it, it seems like only yesterday she was...eight. December 22nd marks the Winter Solstice and there's nothing like having a birthday party on the shortest day of the year. Nothing says party like lack of sunlight and seasonal mood disorder.
Of course, only four friends will be attending her party because the rest are all busy with their own families and or vacations. And even if they could make it, it’ll probably snow by Thursday and the roads will be too dangerous for them to navigate. Next year, I think we’ll celebrate it in January again and perhaps she’ll get more of a turnout. However, December 22nd always seems to be the day for her class holiday party so I’ll still bring in cupcakes for her…she loves that...more than a party.
What do you do to make your December baby feel extra special on their birthdays? Do you celebrate it mid-year with a party in June? Do you wrap their gifts in Christmas or birthday wrapping? Do you pay Christmas carolers extra to sing Happy Birthday? Give us some tips. We could use ‘em.

I was born on 1 Jan...so I can relate. Since I was a teenager, my parents have gotten me a half-birthday present. It is nice to get something special twice a year (a x-mas gift and a birthday gift). I always got a cake and a small gift or flowers on my actual birthday, but the large ($100ish) gift was given in the summer.
My aunt's birthday is on Dec 31st and what we had to do was plan her birthday months in advanced to make sure everyone we invited would be able to plan their vacations around it and i have always thought birthdays were so much more important than x-mas because if they hadn't been born they wouldn't be celebrating the holidays anyways.
I was born on 1 Jan, too...so I can relate (too). Evan, infant car seat covers site.
