I was always told as a child that no one likes a tattle-tale, and I wanted to be liked, so I stopped being petty I guess.
As far as my kids go, I find that they used to do it a lot more when they weren't busy doing their own thing and had a lot of 'down' time -- perhaps it's something they just resort to when they are bored or are looking for attention?
