Easy-Breezy Back-to-School Transition Tips

by Laurie Yarnell on June 03, 2010

As a mom to a daughter and a son (one now in college, the other a recent grad). I've gone through more Back-To-School seasons than I care to remember. One thing I have learned—often the hard way—is that whether your kids are going off to day care, elementary, middle school, or college, there are things you can do to de-stress this whole tricky transition time and make it go more smoothly, for both you and your little scholar.

1) Understand that some kids may have a harder time than others in transitioning socially from summer pals to school friends.
If your child is nervous about making the "switch" to his home social life, consider holding a low-key pizza and video party for his school pals before school starts, if possible, or soon after.

2) Repeat as needed: "A well-rested child makes for a happier student and mom."
We've all been known to let bedtimes slide during the summer months. So start pushing your child's bedtime back gradually (say, 15 minutes a night) until you reach that magic hour that'll help him or her wake up for school with a minimum amount of grumbling and in time for a breakfast other than a handful of Lucky Charms on the run.
